Traditional bags made in the UK

Inspiration

Satchel

In 2008 our Founder Julie, along with her mother Freda, decided to bring back the traditional British satchel which had all but been forgotten. A classic style Julie herself had worn to school, Julie chose the satchel as its structure meant it could stand up on its own, during her school days it always looked neat and tidy and it was a style that only got better with age. Since the days of our first satchels we have introduced a range of new styles to our collection of bags and accessories. Many of these were also inspired by other bags from the past; bags that Julie and her mother felt deserved to be brought back to the forefront and given a modern update. Read on to hear more about these styles.

The Conductor's Bag

For autumn 2017 we launched a brand new style inspired by a traditional bus conductor's bag. We have worked to recreate this classic style, a leather shoulder bag with pockets that conductors used for coins and documents. We've remained true to the style but have added functionality for modern day use; a wider gusset so you can fit more in, and our Twist Lock closure for a touch of chic.

The Push Lock Bag

Our Founder Julie's favourite style, we introduced the Poppy in 2016. For this style we took the essence of a traditional doctor's bag and added our signature push lock closure for a modern finish on a classic style. The traditional doctor's bag was first called a Gladstone bag and designed and manufactured in the mid-nineteenth centry by J G Beard in London who named the bag after Prime Minister Wiliam Gladstone. This bag opened widely from the top using a hinge, enabling doctors to easily take out whatever was needed. Our Poppy Bag is roomy so it can be relied upon for any occasio and looks smart of it complements every style.

The Folio

The Folio was the first style we introduced that was different from the satchel (and batchel - our cross between a satchel and a briefcase complete with handle). Based on a traditional Music Case it features a unique closure using with a classic metal bar that holds the bag closed when placed over its top handle. It was the perfect next step from the satchel as a bag traditionally used by British school pupils - a throw back to Julie's school days.

The Treasure Trunk

Our trunks hark back to a bygone era of steam trains and cruise liners and the glamour of travel. For many Brits, they bring back memories of boarding school packing, of school pupils heading back to their dorms after the long summer holiday, filled with expectation and ambition for the school year ahead. The vintage style is perfect for modern storage and adds to a vintage home interiors feels. Made in the UK, our paper-lined trunks have a leather-effect covering and brass locks to complete the look.
